 Sturdy, less intimidating than a full sized machete August 15, 2010

Sturdy, good steel, not razor sharp but you need a thicker blade to chop through brush. Actually quite easy to wear, not too bulky, and as everyone says, the hooked tip really helps. Very good tool, expect to get a lot of use out of it.

I've used one of these in the Louisiana Bayou and the Hill Country of Texas and it is worth every penny I paid for it. From heavy overgrown vines to low hanging branches it cut everything in my path. It is lightweight with an easy to grip handle and has a curved tip that, in my opinion, makes it safer and easier to use. It is perfect for cutting a trail or clearing out a camp space and if you're a hunter it is a great tool to use for thinning out a shooting lane. I won't go into the woods without it.

This is a good product for clearing trails through brush, vines, and saplings. This tool is light and easy to swing. The cutting edge is extremely sharp which allows for impressive cutting from less than impressive applied force. The handle does become slippery when wet but not so much as to pose a serious safety concern. The sheath is a worthwhile accessory to have. Overall, I have been very satisfied with this brush thinner and would recommend it to anyone.

Various hearty weeds grow thickly around my fence lines and need frequent trimming. I need a tool that's lightweight, easily portable and effective for a variety of things. My string trimmer works for the grasses, but not the sturdier weeds and the blade trimmer works for those, but not the grasses, plus it's heavy and tiring to use. I decided to try this little tool and am so glad I did. It's great. It's sharp and slices off the poke weeds in a flash and can handle things with pretty stiff stems, plus tall grasses when I grab a sheath of them by the tops. The curved blade makes the effort required minimal. I was so pleased with the ease with which I was able to clear around the paddock fence, I set out with my folding saw and this tool to cover one whole side of pasture fence and it looks terrific. Only three more to go :)
The trimmers are great for specialized tasks, but when I am trying to trim a variety of things, they seem more trouble than help as I have to make multiple passes. While this tool can't manage the harder saplings, my little folding saw makes short work of those and carrying both this tool and that one is easy since both are lightweight.
It also makes my trail clearing activities much more productive as I was carrying clippers, loppers and the folding saw, which was a bit cumbersome. Since this tool handles a good variety of things, I only need to pull the saw out for the bigger saplings and cedars. Of course I don't get as close to the ground as I would with a trimmer since I don't want to be bending down all the way, but it's quite reasonable and since I'm less tired after using it, I don't resist going back out there when needed as I did at the thought of fussing with the eccentricities of the trimmers.
All in all, I consider this purchase money very well spent. The zippered case is good quality and even has a protective plastic trough for the blade edge. This little machete will get a lot use around the farm.

I read the reviews and took the plunge. I'm glad I did!
Pros:
- Cuts through brush like butter. The hooked tip works exactly as everyone else has reported - much more efficient than the standard machete shape.
- Extraordinarily well balanced. I can handle it like a hand sickle, with short six-inch strokes, for a delicate touch when needed. It's just as easy to take full strokes to slice through heavy brush.
- Versatile. Cuts grass, brush, branches, vines. Easily handles one-inch saplings or branches. Maybe it'll take a couple of more strokes to get through two-inch trees. In a pinch, it can dispatch larger saplings and tree limbs.
- Just the right size and weight. It's short enough to easily manipulate, but still long enough to cut a full swath. It's light enough to swing all day, but heavy enough to cleave through thick brush.
- NICE SHEATH. I chose the Gerber Brush Thinner Machete over the similar Fiskar Brush Axe because of the recommendations of other reviewers here. I wholeheartedly agree with them. The sheath is excellent and well worth the small price difference.
Cons:
- The handle is a little slick for my tastes. (Easily remedied. I used some red baseball grip tape. Not only is the Gerber more comfortable to grip, it is also easier to find when I need it.)
I have an old cane knife that has a similar shape, but is substantially thicker (and heavier) than the Gerber. There's no comparison between that unwieldy tool and this fine instrument. The Gerber is far more deft and more efficient.

EDIT 6-3-2010: I purchased this item for $28.63 in April. The price listed today is [...]. At that price, I'd recommend the $28.15 Fiskars 7860 Brush Axe as a better value.
